Sort by 'Created date'?

Hi,

Does anyone know of a way to make Finder sort image files by 'Created date'?

'Created date' = date when the content of this item was created = EXIF date time digitized

- as opposed to -

'Created' = date the file was created = 'Date Created' option in sort

It is possible to search by 'Created date' in Finder so surely there must be some terminal code that adds this as a sorting option...

I want to be able to sort, by time/date, image files taken on different cameras, but keeping corrected files next to original raw files. Sorting by name doesn't work as the cameras have different file prefixes, and I don't want to rename the files.

Thanks, td

Hi All

You know, I was going to say that I was a numbskull and that 'Date Created' in sort does sort by 'when the content of an item was created', effectively EXIF date time digitized.

But it appears that finder sorts column view differently depending on whether you are searching or browsing!

(I mostly browse using column or icon view.)

So looking at the screen shot below (nb the extra file in the on the left is a video file):

on the right - when searching for kind:image created:22/03/2017-23/03/2017 -screen and choosing sort by 'Date Created' the files are sorted as I want.

on the left - but when looking in the folder that contains the same images, again sorted by date created, they are in different order! I think ordered by file creation date.

So I do have a solution - use list view or search (thanks viking) - but it does not make sense for Finder to order the same files differently depending on whether they are browsed or searched, when the view and sorting criteria haven't changed.

dialabrain - you are right Photos does sort as I want - but it's a bit cumbersome and I do not want face recognition and there is no way to switch it off.

When I compare the DateTimeOriginal tag in the EXIF data from my iPhone sourced images, to the date/time reported by Finder in its Get Info Created field — the dates match. This appears to be the case with each jpg image that I have checked on my Mac, and that originated from my iPhone.

This gives hope that you can simply Finder list sort on Created, and not worry about Created Date. In the Finder search window, you could ask to see all jpg images that are not screen shots, and that have been created this February:

kind:image (+jpg OR +jp2) created:02/01/2017-02/28/2017 -screen

The same syntax works in Spotlight too.

Well the files in both windows are in the same order... but not by date and the raw files aren't with their corresponding jpegs.

And I have to say that the only place that I can get sorting by created date (date when the content of an item was created) as opposed to date created (time date when file was written) is in the search window.

I'm pretty sure I wrestled with this issue at my old job a few years back when I upgraded the image workstation to Lion - for up to date raw file support - and was hoping to be able to sort by EXIF date time digitized. But in the end I had work to do and there we had a DAM system.

Another screenshot, this time list view, the same file is highlighted in each window - note how its 'created date' is different - 21:40 in browse on the left and 19:47 in search on the right!

The Finder is for manipulating files in the file system, not content. They have started providing search results based on metadata, like song titles, but not the EXIF data. So, there might be hope for some more EXIF info in the future.

However, they wrote an App for doing what you want, so I would imagine rolling those features into the Finder are low on the priority list.

They are also developing an entirely new, modern file system to replace HFS+, so that would probably delay any modifications to the Finder until that is fully implemented in a future OS.

Hi Barney

I realise the sort of solution I'm looking for isn't an out of the box feature.

For example viewing hidden files in Finder isn't a check box feature, but you can make Finder show hidden files by running this command in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES; killall finder

This is the sort of solution I'm looking for.

Last night I looked through Finder preferences/defaults - which you can call up with a Terminal command:

defaults read com.apple.finder

- but if 'created date' is in this file it is called something else, and it had been a long day! I'll try removing 'created date' from my extended search list tonight and see what is removed from the defaults file.

Would I be better posting my query in another part of the discussion forum? If so do you have any suggestions?

All the best, td

Hi tdaar,

Just wondering - did you get a solution to this? Any evolution?

I'm facing a similar issue right now, since I have spent the last days organizing my family photos on a cloud server, so they may be accessible through different devices (Mac, Windows, iPhone etc).

I simply can't believe that Windows can show the pictures in any folder sorted by 'date taken', and Mac OS (Sierra) doesn't.

Edit: just adding that the 'search' solution is the best I've seen so far - even though little practical.

Thanks!
