WARNING about TenFourFox (Firefox)

For those who use TenFourFox (for lack of any other option), be aware that by default it writes "restore" and other files to your hard drive (or ssd) EVERY 15 SECONDS, all day long. These files go into the profile folder in your user library on your system drive. There is a parameter (browser.sessionstore.interval) to change the interval, but note that it's measured in milliseconds, not seconds.

(Thus you can set TenFourFox to backup your session EVERY MILLISECOND if you want, i.e. continuously. That's plainly negligent and maybe criminally so.)

Over the course of a day, if you're online and have 2 or 3 windows open on average, TenFourFox (Firefox) can easily write multiple GIGABYTES of data to your hard drive--utterly useless, pointless, garbage data. This page has a good summary of the problem:

https://www.servethehome.com/firefox-is-eating-your-ssd-here-is-how-to-fix-it/

It's not only writing restore files but also cookies, status reports, etc. etc. Guess what this is doing to your hard drive..? It's just as bad if not worse for SSD's (solid state devices) which have limited capacity for rewrites. Of course, physical hard drives are also limited--they wear out.

I'm a biologist, and even though I know a lot about computers, I don't have time to deal with the ins and outs of every piece of crap software that I'm forced to use, so I have to trust people to write apps that not only work properly but which don't do obscene things behind the scenes.

Clearly, writing constantly to your startup drive--gigabytes of worthless data every day--is obscene, and it may be criminally negligent. When I have more time I'm going to look into that. Type anything at all in TenFourFox and it writes 10-20 little files to your hard drive. W-th-fk?!

NOTE: In the 20 min or so it's taken me to draft this post (in TextEdit), TenFourF*k has written roughly 15 MB to my startup drive. Yet, I haven't even been using it, and all that's open is a single google window.

Now a half an hour later, with the sessionrestore interval set to 2000000 (=555 hours), it's still writing crap to my hard drive every minute or two (this includes a 1 MB file cookies.sqlite and a 10 MB file places.sqlite). Apparently it writes these files every time you do *anything*, or else at some short interval, so increasing the sessionrestore interval doesn't fix this.

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11), G4; G5; Dual-Core iMac.

Try lower values as discussed at…

https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Firefox/browser-sessionstore-interval-limits-for- Firefox-12/m-p/536739

There is also a config variable for browser.sessionstore.enabled, does that disable the frequent writes?

Search for other settings by looking for browser.sessionstore in about config if you want to see others that may be related.

I don't have a PPC Mac in front of me so apologies if this doesnt apply, I checked in Firefox it may not be identical.

P.S. how are you checking the frequent writes? I don't recall Activity Monitor being very useful pre Snow Leopard 🙂

P.P.S. 2000000 is in milliseconds or 33.33 minutes not 555 hours…

Perhaps you should try and contact the persons behind TenFourFox

maybe use their problem forums or send email to the principals with

an outline of the issues you've experienced. ~ I've had some useful

replies from Cameron and other persons with floodgap/tenfourfox.

Also, if you used Console logs to determine this type of activity, you

may post a screenshot of those directly into an ASC discussion by

using the 'camera icon' and resulting options to locate an image file

and upload into the open discussion while you are creating a post.

{TenFourFox uses up to 2GB virtual memory/swap, at times per

Activity Monitor records; per session read/writes to HDD can be

as great a number as virtual memory in Leopard 10.5.8: 35GB.}

While I've used browser settings to change and block Apple's newest

fonts that affect TenFourFox rendering most all page content, not sure

how you have resolved any issues this font created for Ten4Fx users.

Older browsers in general have been distanced from modern web sites

by the security measures newer site software uses in the making of them.

About this most recent issue you mention, I've not seen any evidence in

Console logs; while other blacklisted and font blocking is evident due to

using 'about:config' in browser URL and hit return. Then read through list

until ' gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled = false' can be set (from true). This

would allow odd font renderings mostly from Apple.com pages where a

roll-out of newer Apple fonts were made default.

This would not normally disaffect any Apple items in Leopard 10.5.8, but

in the TenFourFox browser, they've set it up to also work in Tiger 10.4.11;

so the render problem is due to the Apple font needing blocked in relation

to Tiger, and not so much Leopard. Other issue, is most sites who use "S"

or secure https:// cannot be accessed by most older browsers, recently.

You may be able to change the effect TenFourFox shows in system logs

where it may be a concern, by looking into 'about:config' settings. But

do be sure to note their default state; so as to return there if a change is

not helpful in resolving the original problem.

The issue with TenFourFox writing to the hard drive, is odd; my Macs do

not show evidence of this kind of issue. I do see various arguments in

Console logs where sites are failing to render 'flash' because I don't have

it, and TenFourFox has no support for Flash. Other items like 'TenFourFox/

Box' where specific sites can be entered to create limited use 'boxed site'

browsers. I see issues with gmail and sites I may visit from a boxed site

show up in Console logs. Failed javascript from NWS weather sites, too.

The suggestion to contact persons who actively (and voluntarily) work to

keep TenFourFox updated - with this issue - may be helpful to other users.

{Curious, IF your TenFourFox build download for Mac CPU is correct.}

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂
