Verify ID with Credit Card Information?

I logged into my apple.com with my user name and password. I wanted to setup 2 step verification. When I reached my account page, it kept asking for my credit card number, expiration date and security code, claiming to need it for verification of my identity. Does Apple do this or is something wrong? Appreciate any insights. Thanks.

For Apple ID verification, Apple uses several identification points. They will have you set up several security questions, will want to be able to access the devices you have and, as a last-ditch effort to verify your identity, a credit card with the expiration date and the first 6 and last 4 numbers.

Think in terms of needing to do something with your Apple ID several years from now, and not remembering your security question answers and no longer having access to your old telephone. Being able to pull your credit card out of your wallet to complete the verification is a real time saver.
