Will 2.0 USB Drive Work in 3.0 Port

I'm just wondering if the 2.0 USB Drive will work right in a 3.0 port? I read on google of people saying that if they stuck a 2.0 drive into their 3.0 port first for the very first time of anything being in that port that the port would always run at a 2.0 speed after that.

Also if the 3.0 is running at its normal speed for data transfer will their be any issues with the 2.0 USB drive?

This question is not only for iMac but all mac computers in general.

Thanks

iMac, iOS 9.3.5, my iOS is 10.11.6 safari is 9.1.3

The USB 3 port is backwards compatible and if you put a USB 2 device into it the port doesn't get "stuck" forever. It doesn't bother the drive either. That said, I know that there are USB chipsets that don't totally follow the USB specifications so it is possible you might come across a USB 2 device that won't work in a USB 3 port. However I'm in tech and I've yet to come across one that won't.

As I said, I've not come across any USB 2 drives/enclosures that won't work when connected to a USB 3 port. This includes name brands and even generic no-names and where I work we've come across a lot of both. That said, I personally tend to purchase Icy Dock or OWC's own branded enclosures along with quality drives appropriate for the task. I do occasionally pick up something at a big box store and then I stick with name brands but I do avoid Western Digital enclosures because they tend to use proprietary technology. (It often isn't possible to open their enclosure to swap out the drive or use the drive in another enclosure.)
