It's not a good idea to store non-Time Machine backup files on a volume designated for Time Machine backups.

Because after all these decades a Mac remains a very open and user-configurable general purpose computer that still permits users to make a mess of things if they insist. It may not always be that way.
FWIW, you can't install Windows using Boot Camp on an external drive.
