can pages handle a word perfect document

I have thousands of Word Perfect documents on my PC and backed up with Carbonite. I'm currently using Pages on my MacBook Air, and don't want to purchase Word. It is my understanding that I can open Word documents in Pages. I CAN use WP to save them as Word documents, but would prefer to skip this step, if possible. Maybe I'm just way too set in my ways. If I don't purchase Word (I hate it compared to Word Perfect), is there another Apple product you know of that could handle the conversion, or that is at least a better word processor than Pages? Realistically, I would probably only want to convert a few hundred of the documents to my MacBook. Thanks in advance for your help. I'm not really comfortable with my MacBook; still feel like a Newbie.

WordPerfect, like Pages, is an island document format. Apple has no solution for converting WordPerfect documents.

You can open WordPerfect documents directly in the free, current (v5.3.1.2 as of this post) release of LibreOffice (fresh), and there is support for WordPerfect graphics too. Do not assume however, that any WordPerfect macros are going to convert. LibreOffice is a clone of MS Office, and has the most accurate Word document support, next to Word itself.

LibreOffice can be scripted to automate WordPerfect document conversion to Word document formats, if that is helpful.
