My iPhone 6S Headphone Jack Is Shorting Out My Headphones

I've gone through 5 pairs of headphones so far since I got this phone in November 2016. At first I was using the headphones I have been using since my iPhone 5C, and they stopped working so I just figured it was because they were old. I tossed those headphones and started using the headphones that came with this new phone; a week later, the headphones stopped working. I began using Skullcandy earbuds, which worked for a month, then stopped. I am on my last pair of earbuds, also Skullcandy, and these, too, have stopped working. I don't mean they stopped working with just my iPhone, but even on my laptop and other devices. First one earbud stops working, then the sound starts getting choppy, then all together the earbuds stop working. Is this something I should take my phone to the Genius Bar for? I have only dropped this phone once, with its Otterbox case on, other than that the phone lives in my purse so I don't think I abused my phone to the point where it would compromise the jack. Thoughts?

Hello Gabyp44,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I'm understanding correctly, after several pairs of earbuds you are still having issues as they begin to fail after a while. I know how important it is to have working equipment and will be happy to assist.

Please try the steps in the following article: If your headphones don‘t work with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Check for debris, damage, or loose connections

  1. Check for debris in the headphone port on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
  2. Check your headphone cable, connector, remote, and earbuds for damage, like wear or breakage.
  3. Look for debris on the meshes in each earbud. To remove debris, gently brush all openings with a small, soft-bristled brush that's clean and dry.
  4. Firmly plug your headphones back in. If your iOS device has a case, remove the case to get a firm connection.

If your headphones still aren't working, follow the steps below for your issue.

If you can't hear any sound or if only one side of your headphones works

  1. Adjust the volume with the volume buttons on your iOS device or use the Volume slider in Control Center.
  2. To see if you need a replacement, try a second pair of headphones. If the second pair works, contact the manufacturer of the initial pair and ask if you need a replacement. If the second pair doesn't work, contact Apple Support.

Cheers.

My son had an issue with his iPhone 6 where the headphone jack started to flake, then stopped working entirely. I discovered that the $9 Lightning to headphone adapter designed for the iPhone 7 actually works on the iPhone 6/6S. Run to Wally World and pick up the adapter and see if your previous and current headphones continue to work. it worked for my son :-)
