How to recover a hung Mac login/logout WITHOUT killing other user sessions?

If I decide to fast-switch to (my daughter's) user account to print something and the system 'beach-balls' on login: How to I get back to MY session to save all my work?

The same question if someone logs off and the system beach-balls: How do I switch to the other (running) accounts to recover their work?

I would rather kill a single session than have to power-cycle my machine.

(Ideally I can do this on the local machine, but in a pinch I am willing to login from a remote machine or iOS device to do this)

It's Sierra OS.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.6), none

You might want to consider updating your software to see if that fixes the problem.

Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.

macOS Sierra 10.12.4 Combo

SIMBL is a system hack and it is crashing. Try removing it.

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
