slow connection to internet after upgrade

I just upgraded my OS to the latest release. I was about 3 years behind......I know, I know. Since the upgrade when I open safari, while the desktop is "hibernating" it takes 15 seconds to connect to the internet. Chrome does the same. Is there a way to speed this up. That stinks!!
