what does a FireWire look like

I'm trying to connect my Mac Mini to my older iMac desktop as a display. I put my iMac in target display mode and a white screen with a FireWire symbol rotates on the screen. Does that mean I need to connect my Mac Mini and iMac with a FireWire. Also, what is a A fire wire and do I need to connect my Mac Mini and iMac together with a FireWire

That symbol indicates that the iMac is in Target Disk mode. You need to use Target Display mode(if supported) or Virtual Network Computing.
