iPhone overheating/draining battery due to Apple News App overclocking wi-fi

I just updated my iPhone 6S to iOS 10.3. I noticed while running the Apple News app my phone was heating up and my battery began to drain very quickly, but only while I was on wi-fi.

So I performed a test:

  1. I killed all apps on my phone and did a "Forced-reboot" (holding both the home and sleep buttons down until the iPhone restarts).
  2. Then I launched the News app while connected to wi-fi. Within seconds the app started gulping data and it began to heat up (see data spike and Free Memory drops to 1% in screen shot below).

  3. Then I turned wi-fi off and immediately the data flow stopped and my began to cool down (see both the data drop-off and the Free Memory opens up to 29% in screen shot below).

I can only conclude the News app under iOS 10.3 has an issue with wi-fi data usage and it's overclocking the wi-fi chip causing the heat and battery drain.

Is anyone else having this problem or able to replicate?
