OS X Sierra 10.12.4 USB mouse

Is there a fix for external USB connected mouse freezing? ... has happened several times on Macbook air since upgrading to release 10.12.4

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

I think I'm having a similar issue.

  • MacBook Pro (Early 2013)
  • Upgraded from earlier version of macOS Sierra to latest (10.12.4)
  • Using Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Wireless USB mouse


I know this mouse may not be officially supported by Microsoft on Mac, but it was working mostly fine (except maybe one or two of the special buttons) for a while. After the macOS upgrade, it doesn't seem to work anymore at all. (It may have worked momentarily after the upgrade but don't remember for sure).


I've tried plugging wireless USB dongle directly into laptop as well as a USB hub. Also tried rebooting macOS.


The light is on the mouse so I think batteries are still OK.


I didn't install any special driver for the mouse to work originally with macOS Sierra.


I'm hoping that Apple may note the new USB mouse issues with the latest Sierra update and perhaps provide a new patch release.


Any other suggestions?

its an old Dell optical mouse which worked fine without loading a driver pre 10.12.4


the symptom is that it works for a while, then freezes (with the mouse still powered and keyboard plugged into same USB still working) ... unplug and replug it works again. Happens very regularly ... maybe 30x so far since upgrading .. never happened pre upgrade to release 10.12.4 ( I have been using this combination of mouse with MacBook Air for ~2 years)

Well, it is possible that the Dell mouse and 10.12.4 are not 100% compatible. There were changes of course to 10.12.4. I still use a wired Apple mouse on all my iMacs. It works fine. My g/f has an inexpensive (cheap) mouse running on Yosemite which also has no driver and works just fine. However, the scroll wheel will not work with El Capitan or Sierra.


These things happen sometimes.

Same here to, but a different Mouse, it is a Kensington Trackball, connected via Apple Thunderbold Display. I can see that LED of the trackball is off when it is not working. This happens most of the time I wakeup my Macbook Pro from idle. It doesn't help to unplug/plug the trackball - I have to unplug the Thunderbold display from Macbook to get it working again. The Thunderbold display is still working after wakeup, mouse and keyboard don't.

I had this issue on my Mac Mini after the update to 10.12.14. After trying for a while to get it working I eventually tried turning off the mouse with the switch on the mouse (Logitech M185) and rebooting with only the track pad enabled. Once the reboot was done and I was back to the desktop, I clicked about a bit with just the track pad, all OK, then I turned the mouse back on and it worked exactly as it did prior to the update. I rebooted again (without turning off the mouse) just to make sure and the USB Logitech mouse was fine. I cannot vouch that it will work on macbooks etc. but it worked for me on mu MacMini. Hope it helps.

I have this problem too. A DXT ergonomic mouse stopped working after this update.


If I unplug the mouse and plug it back in, I can move the cursor until I click a button and it freezes. It is connected to my MBP late 2016 via a Satechi Slim USB-C hub. Other peripherals work fine when connected through the hub.


This is really frustrating as I need an ergonomic mouse and cannot use the trackpad or any of Apple's devices.
