iOS 10.3 Safari cookies won't delete

Is anyone having any issues with cookies in 10.3 Safari? Cookies don't seem to delete when I try to remove them using all the delete methods. Additionally, when I block cookies, cookies still get stored.

May be cookies settings have changed and I need to change something. Does anyone know?

The inability to delete certain cookies appears to be a bug in Safari and we all hope Apple is on this.

You will see in my threads that I found some persistent cookies--that previously would not delete--can be removed by visiting the site of the persistent cookie, go to Settings | Safari | Advanced | Website Data and manually remove the cookie. This only seems to work while Safari is still on that site. Additionally, while Safari is set to block cookies [ Settings | Safari | Block Cookies | Always Block ], 0 bytes cookies still get stored in Website Data.

I've learned more through additional trials:

  • A google.com persistent cookie will not remove using the method noted above, all other google tracking cookies do remove
  • 0 bytes cookies return data to web sites in that domain; I tested with a simple .cgi page and was able to return that the cookie exists, it just has no data
  • Resets [ Settings | General | Reset ] do not remove persistent cookies

Read this article : Clear the history and cookies from Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

and follow the steps in the article .

Block cookies

A cookie is a piece of data that a site puts on your device, so it can remember you when you visit again. Here's how to choose whether Safari blocks cookies:

  1. Tap Settings > Safari > Block Cookies.
  2. Choose an option: Always Block, Allow from Current Websites Only, Allow from Websites I Visit, or Always Allow.

If you block cookies, some web pages might not work. Here are some examples:

  • You might not be able to sign in to a site using your correct username and password.
  • You might see a message that cookies are required or that your browser's cookies are off.
  • Some features on a site might not work.

Best settings is allow from websites I visit : Safari for Mac: Manage cookies and website data using Safari

If you choose always block :

Always block: Safari doesn’t let any websites, third parties, or advertisers store cookies and other data on your Mac. This may prevent some websites from working properly.

And , if allow from websites I visit is selected : Safari accepts cookies and website data only from websites you visit. Safari uses your existing cookies to determine whether you have visited a website before. Selecting this option helps prevent websites that have embedded content in other websites you browse from storing cookies and data on your Mac.

tugb, thank you for the information on blocking cookies.

The issue is that cookies are not removing when I try to delete, and when block cookies is set, cookies still get stored with a file size of 0.

Subsequent to my posting, I figured something out. There were approximately 20 that were persistent, with a files size of 0, after I deleted cookies. The other cookies were being deleted.

My resolution was to turn cookies back on, visit on of the ~20, then manually remove the cookie will the file size of > 0. I visited all sites with the persistent cookie and followed the same steps.

I have yet to figure out why cookies are still being stored with block cookies set. However, at least they can be deleted without having to follow the steps noted above for persistent cookies.

You mean to say some cookies are still shown inspite you check the box of block cookies , some websites need cookies to work properly .

If you are doing a normal browsing in a Mac or I phone cookies is required to work the site properly .

I ' ll give you an example , opened safari > its preferences > privacy > click on manage website data .

User uploaded file

A window appears :

User uploaded file

Right now I am signed in ASC through my Mac , if I click on remove all and click on done my computer will be logged out , means some cookies are required to browse the website .

No sir, just upgraded to ios 10.3.3 on iPhone 7 and this has not been resolved.

The screenshot attached shows the result of :

1. Going to settings: Safari and selecting "clear history and website data"

2. Selecting Advanced > Website Data > Remove all website data

3. Returning to the screen to see they are not cleared and then Individually swiping and deleting each cookie/cache/lso

4. Returning to the Advanced > Website Data screen to see the same durn cookies/caches

So, they emphatically do not get cleared. They might seem like they do as part of smoke-and-mirror UI/UX choices. They do not clear or they regenerate immediately.

In particular, the identity.com seems to be of nefarious purpose in terms of tracking.

The workaround is only partial - disable Safari entirely on your phone via restrictions. Then curse loudly every time you must use Safari for some reason baked into iOS, which will not use your preferred browser.

iPhone 6 plus - zero byte cookies issue

With the recent introduction of iOS 11 and subsequent updates I'm accumulating remnant 0 Byte cookies. iOS 10 was equally had the same issue. You wonder why Apple has failed to remedy such a basic error. Thankfully, touch-wood, there have been no like problems with my iPads. Having recently purchased a 10.5 pro and Pencil. I hope that my support will reflect an expeditious response. I've attached an evidential screen-dump. Thank you.User uploaded file

OK then, I can suggest to turn OFF Airplane Mode: Use Airplane Mode on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support so to apply the previous steps mentioned above and force a restart: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support then then turn ON Airplane Mode check if all is set?, or else a Genius Reservation when your issue is unresolved: https://www.apple.com/ca/retail/geniusbar/ .Good Day 🙂

To view a website , cookies are required and saved in the data bases .

Enter into user library > macOS Sierra: Library folder

In safari folder some use a method find a folder Safari > in that Data bases , local storage folders are found and delete the contents of this two folders into the trash , restart and empty the trash .

But once again you browse that website or any the cookies will once again stored but this a temporarily , I prefer deleting entire safari contents apart from Bookmarks.plist into the trash .

But it doesn't mean that cookies will stop saving , they will have to save .

But this a behaviour of safari , cookies are meant to be saved and they will be always saved . Clear all history and website data is used .

Thats , why some users are using private browsing as for every day use they don't have to delete cookies , because cookies are never saved in private browsing .

That is not something that anyone here can provide you with. Submit your feedback to Apple here:

In the beginning of the thread manual method was there how to remove cookies from safari browser .For Mac computers and Mac mini .

Also in user library macOS Sierra: Library folder

From the folder Cookies entire contents are removed into the trash , these are temporary files , restarting the machine and emptying the trash immediately creates new ones , and in user library - safari folder the date is stored in Databases and Local storage the contents are removed .

But these are temporary , if the Mac user again visit the website the cookies are " ought " to be stored as to browse a website cookies are necessary .

Take an example of face book account , before login to the website , in safari preferences if cookies is blocked and then the user try to sign in it will show an error , it needs cookies ( a bit of information ) .

I have the same issue and have tried all the suggested resolutions short of full resets in part because if you have done a backup you will only reinstall the problem. I am in the UK and the problem sites are:

  • iPhone 6s = weather.com
  • iPad Mini 4 = argos.com & eBay.co.uk
  • MacBook Air = eBay.co.uk

Additionally further rogue websites show numbering anything from 2-30 depending on when you look and this after not having launched Safari!!!!

I hope that Apple is working on this bug as it is most frustrating and it can limit users ability to visit certain sites from Safari. You always can try another browser that works on iPhone, such as TOR.

The work around I've figured out (see earlier in thread regarding my experience with iPhone) is...

  • go to the page in Safari that corresponds to the cookie that will not clear; it must be the original domain, note that depending on your settings some sites may drop a cookie though you may not know that you visited their site, these are often tracking and analytics cookies, such as google-analytics.com
  • while Safari is open on that page, go into Settings | Safari | Advanced | Website Data and manually remove the offending cookie (swipe and delete) then click 'Remove All Website Data'; note that others have indicated that Safari must be closed so that the cookie doesn't reload, however, my experience was that the offending cookie wouldn't remove unless Safari was open, and that 'Remove All Website Data' closes pages so that can not reload cookies
  • some cookies will not remove using these steps, which appears to be part of the bug, my experience is that google.com will not remove using any method suggested by others in this thread, others have indicated in the thread that there are other sites that similarly will not remove

I've had the same issue with being unable to delete a number of "0 Bytes" cookies on my iPad for a while, but recently an eBay.co.uk cookie of 508KB size began to exhibit the same behaviour - at which point I "snapped", enough is enough! I found a solution, however it's a little long-winded and requires a Mac:

  1. Connect the iOS device to a Mac and create a backup using iTunes
  2. Open the backup using an explorer/editor tool such as iBackupBot (I was a little dubious about using this at first, but it was signed by a registered developer and did not require installation nor did it ask for a password input at any stage, so pretty safe)
  3. Navigate to the folder "User App Files > com.apple.mobilesafari > Library > Webkit > Website Data"
  4. Delete all files and folders in the enclosed IndexedDB folder - this is where the 508KB of eBay data seemed to be
  5. Delete all files and folders in the enclosed WebSQL folder - where all the other "0 Bytes" cookies are stored. I was amazed there were even cookies in here which didn't show up in the Website Data view in Settings. Mine had a whole trove of cookies from argos.co.uk, ebay.co.uk, and uk.farnell.com amongst others.
  6. Restore the backup to your iOS device using iTunes

This was sucessful for me on both my iPad Pro and iPhone SE - both on iOS 10.3.3. I can't confirm if it will work for iOS 11 devices, but from what I've read many people have found the cookie problem to be fixed in 11.1.2.

Apr 10, 2017 7:41 AM in response to pt1827

I tried this suggestion, but it didn't work for me... total waste of my time, because the cookie is still there, never seen this before .... and hope it isn't something more serious, than just a cookie! I would hate to think I am going to have to do an erase all content and setting, to get rid of one **** questionable cookie! I find it odd, to say the least!
