iTUNES 6.XXX apparently kidnapped my CD drives.

Hi,

I looked carefully for other related posts relating to iTunes and my issue. None really matched, but this issue is repeatable.

I received an iPod Shuffle for Christmas. It is a fantastic device, whose features I wanted to share with another family member. Pursuant to using this I decided to download and install the latest iTunes s/w. My first step was to uninstall an old copy of iTunes and reinstall the latest version.

After doing the uninstall of iTunes I found that both of my CD drives (Plextor SCSI CD-ROM and CD-RW) stopped working. This indicated to me that, unlike any other s/w I had ever used, this Apple application had gained full control of my CD drives. Thus, after removing the software, control was lost and I also lost usage of my drives. The device manager of Windows XP Pro, SP2, showed ⚠ in front of both drives. They had been working without incident prior to this uninstall. None of the suggested fixes, such as reinstalling the drivers, worked to solve the problem. Uninstalling the drives and restarting did not reset the drives by reinstalling during a reboot.

Finally, I used the System Restore utility of XP to place the restore point just before the installation of iTunes. This gave me back my drives, but has left many suspicions about usage of iTunes that are not in the best interests of HONEST users of Apple software. Consequently I declined any options during the installation of iTunes 7 not relevant to my usage of music I personally own on CD's. I had no interest in music downloads, and have even less after this experience. I will be even more certain that any future music I buy will be on CD's from music vendors sent to me by "snail mail" or UPS.

This experience caused me many hours of chasing a solution. As I've found the cause of the problem, I only submit this here for those in a similar circumstance that haven't discovered how to get their CD drives back to being operational.

I would, however, appreciate any feedback on this post. I believe the purveyors of electronic media are crossing the line in gaining access to that which is none of their business.

I would also like to mention that searching for a way to contact Apple directly over this issue could not be located, despite much additional time searching. Like many other similar businesses they are shifting all of those costs on to users. There no longer is a way to communicate with them directly over a technical support issue without having to pay for it, or maybe it's so carefully hidden that most can't find it.
