Apple TV remote app doesn't see Apple TV

Need some help here - have downloaded the new Apple TV remote app to both iPad and iPhone both of which are on iOS 10.3. Apple TV is running tvOS 10.2 All three are on the exact same wi-fi network (double checked). When I select "Add Apple TV" on either iPhone or iPad no Apple TV's appear at all.

On Apple TV "Remote and Devices" --> "Remote App and Devices" both my iPad and iPhone appear there! Airplay works fine on both devices. The Apple TV remote app on both devices for whatever reason does not see apple TV. FYI - the old remote app still does work on the iPhone.
