I have segments (5-10) minutes of old vhs family tapes i would like to copy to dvd. Can anyone recommend software for my MacBook air with external mac dvd copier. I would probably need software with some type of editing function. I do have a Magnovox combo vhs to dvd copier, but cant edit with it

If you use the VHS to DVD copier you'll have to rip the movie from the resulting DVDs with Handbrake or similar before you can edit them with a movie editor. This will degrade the video quality.
To get the best quality final result I would have a commercial outfit digitize the VHS tapes and give you .mov (or whatever format video files they offer) files to edit/crop, combine and add an iDVD project.
You might be able to give them specific time segments for each VHS tape to digitize so they wouldn't have to digitize the entire tape if that were to prove expensive.
Much depends on what version of OS X and iMovie you are running. You need to digitise the VHS file and import it into iMovie for editing, then to a video DVD creation application like iDVD.

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.
