How to change misspelled ID address that was entered on my new phone?

Bought new phones 3 months ago at Best Buy. On my wife's phone the apple ID email address was misspelled and somehow entered. Now unable to use ID to use icloud, etc as there really isn't an Email account with the misspelled address. Thus, it appears that Apple cannot verify the account so that some of the iaps can't by used. Attempted correction at Best Buy did not work even though the Apple rep happened to be in the store and helped "fix" it.What to do?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 10.3

If this Apple ID was created just 3 months ago, I don't see how this could happen.

Any email address you give to Apple for account purposes is checked in real time for both accuracy and as a security measure. Apple immediately sends an email to any address you give it, and provides a code you must enter back where you started.

This proves the address is both genuine and in your control.

Entry of an incorrect or misspelled Apple ID/email address should have come back as an error.

Sounds like something else is at at play here.
