Jittery scrolling on new 2017 9.7" iPad

I just purchased a 2017 9.7" iPad (128 GB) and noticed that there is occasional (and somewhat annoying) jitter when scrolling in Safari and Photos. This machine replaced an iPad Air which doesn't have this problem -- its scrolling is buttery smooth despite having a much older CPU/GPU. I appreciate that the A9 CPU performance should be about 1.8 times as fast as the chip in the Air, but I haven't seen any real-world benchmarks about the video performance. Is it really that bad?

For what it is worth, I played around with a number of similar iPads in the local Apple store and they all had the same jittery scrolling. The comparisons were done using Safari and looking at the same website -- both my old Air and a 9.7" Pro had much smoother scrolling.

Any ideas what is happening?

Thanks.

I noticed the same issue with the new iPad. Many webpages scroll badly as a good example take official Apple iPad website that jitters a lot, especially when scrolling up. No other iPad (Air 2, Pro, mini) have this issue so I decided to get a refund.

In addition,

iPad 5 has been on the market for nearly 7 weeks, now!

Apple has, probably, already sold 10,000-20,000 iPad 5 units worldwide in this timeframe and I maybe underestimating this amount!

So, every iPad 5 that has been purchased by a user, to date, would be posting in these forums with this issue.

This is NOT happening here.

AND I have seen this issue.

It's NOT THAT subtle!

Other "discerning" iPad users would definitely pick up on this jitter/stutter scrolling issue!

It just isn't noticeable in games.

I saw the issue in overall operation.

I only experienced this on the two display units in the store.

I didn't ask to look at an iPad 5 out of the box in from my Apple Store's inventory.

AND who are YOU telling ME what I should do or NOT do or what to post or not to post!

Last time I checked, I live in the good ole' US of A where I am free to do or post anything I wish!

Plus, I am a long time volunteer here and as long as I and the rest of us who post here do not violate Apple's Terms of Use (ToU) that you and I agreed to when signing up to use these community support forums, I am pretty much free to post my observations, advice, opinions and solutions as I much as I like and see fit to do here!

Just like you!

Feel free to continue post any other observations, if you find any new, on this iPad 5 jitter/stutter scrolling issue!

Only a large number of iPad 5s with this jitter defect will be considered as significant enough to be a concerned issue.

If you believe that this jittering/stuttering scrolling issue is of a major concern, you can place feedback about that issue to Apple using Apple's feedback channel here.

The 3 or 4 regular voulunteer users here that reported no issues with their iPad 5 models posted in another area of the forums that are inaccessible to new registered users for quite awhile to prevent unwanted cross postings and arguments.

And your original reply did NOT include that you purchased and iPad 5 and even if you are experiencing this issue and you STILL have not stated if the iPad 5 you purchased has this stuttering/jittering issue or not!

Your reply to me WAS, absolutely, an attack on my postings about this issue!

I feel you posted just to be argumentative and youur statements are not being, at all, helpful, as well!

As well as your little condescending "ha ha's" and hee hee's seem to bare out!

Unless larger numbers of users report into these forums about this "current iPad 5 hardware defect" in substantially MUCH, MUCH larger numbers, the few users in these couple of postings making statements like this is a product wide iPad 5 hardware issue, or the stutter/jitter issue must be affecting a lot of iPad 5 models is, patently, a false statement!

Period!

Again, if everyone here SO disagrees with my reasoning about this, please feel free to inform Apple about this widespread defect by using the available feeback channel.

This is the only real way to get Apple to notice this issue.

For what it is worth, I am returning the iPad and have purchased an iPad Air 2 for $30 less for the same configuration (Best Buy). The Air 2 is noticeably lighter (1.3 oz) and the scrolling jitter is almost completely absent. Using them side by side, the Air 2 has a less reflective display but is less bright -- for outdoor use, this is a wash. The new iPad has a larger battery -- this should make it last a bit longer. The CPU is a bit faster (about 30%), but this is not a problem in any apps I run (on the Air 2).

The main reason for choosing the Air 2 is the display jitter -- most people would not notice it very much, for me it was very annoying.

Thanks. I am surprised that very few people noticed this -- when I returned the unit I demonstrated the issue to the person at the Apple Store and she couldn't see it. One of the nice things about iOS is it's silky smoothness and the jerky scrolling stood out like a sore thumb. My "new" Air 2 is as smooth as the Pro.

Another thing I didn't like about the new iPad is it's appearance of being thrown together out of old parts: Air screen, slightly modified Air case, iPhone 6s processor, etc. Apple usually uses somewhat optimized parts in each iPad iteration and the new one seems an exception.

Despite claims of greater CPU performance, the Air 2 has 3 cores, so apps which need performance (games?) might do as well on the older machine and the only GPU test I have seen shows that they have similar performance (the Air 2 has 8 GPH cores, the new iPad has 6).

The 2017 iPad 5 is touted as the budget iPad and is geared toward getting older iPad 2, 3, 4 and 1st gen Mini users to upgrade their aging ( 5 and 6 year old) iPads to an iPad with a huge spec update as well as as a new device with 64 bit app support.

Older iPads only support 32 bit apps and support for those 32 bit apps will start to disappear by the end of the year with the introduction of iOS 11.

This model iPad is NOT a replacement for the last, two year old iPad Air 2. There maybe a new iPad Air model coming for all we know, but the iPad 5th generation isn't it!

The jittery scrolling maybe some sort of defect and maybe your Apple Store had a bunch of these defective units?

No one else here has posted this issue with their new 2017 iPad 5 models.

My iPad 2017 has this exact same issue. The iPad 2017's I tested in the Apple store did the same thing. I have reason to believe that they all do this but only discerning people will notice it. I want to know if it is meant to be like this due to the iPad being a cheaper model or if it can be fixed with software updates. If the issue is due to poorer/lower spec hardware then I will return the iPad as it is not enjoyable to use.

I agree - it was very annoying and very noticeable to me, though other observers had trouble seeing it. I thought that it might be software related and installed 10.3.1. Perhaps it was my imagination, but this seemed to help very slightly. The jitter is was still there.

I have some hypotheses about the problem. First, the GPU in the A9 is designed for a phone which has fewer pixels than the iPad. Perhaps it is some such mismatch. Also, the phone chips are probably designed with low power consumption as a very high priority and might be simpler than the ones for the iPad. Note that this the first time (I believe) that a phone chip is being used in a retina iPad. I suppose, given Apple's secrecy about hardware details, we will never know.

I agree with your hypothesis. That is something which I didn't think of but that makes perfect sense. Still I would expect apple to be able to make it work regardless. If this problem is due to the device being fundamentally flawed then that's a shame as it is otherwise a good device.

Not sure how many new 2017 iPad 5 models have been purchased to date, but so far only 3 users in this post have reported this jittery scrolling issue.

If 3000 iPad 5 models have been sold, worldwide, to date, this is only an issue affecting 1% of these iPad models.

I have watched quite a few YouTube reviews of this new 2017, iPad 5 and none of the reviewers have reported this jittery page scrolling issue.

I suspect that the three of you purchased defective iPad 5 models.

It's been nearly an entire month that this iPad 5 has been available.

If this issue was commonplace, there would be more users posting in the iPad forums about this.

Also, if the jittery page scroll is this subtle, many users may not have even noticed it and possibly for many users, is a non-issue?

Not sure.

But with only three users posting here complaining about a page scrolling issue, so far, this may not be a widespread issue with all new 2017, iPad 5 models.

Possibly, maybe making a mountain out mole hill about this "defect"?

How is the scrolling in other apps like iOS Mail, Apple Music, other scrollable apps?

This jittery scrolling maybe limited to just certain apps making the issue a specific software issue.

I'll be going to my local Apple Store soon to check out the new iPad 5 for my wife as she has been using my "hand me down" iPad 2 and 3 models and I want to get her a brand new, up to date iPad 5 without paying over $500 for an large storage capacity iPad.

I have a few months to save up some cash.

So, I'll be going to check one of these out, in person.

So, I'll scrutinize this scrolling issue and get back to you about that!

Like I stated, only 3 users in this post have reported this, so far.

No other reports about this here in these forums.

I can't say anymore about this until I can investigate this myself.

Well, you can add me to this list as well....Twice.

I purchased the new iPad 2017 last week. And ALL games i tried,i repeat ALL games had stuttery scrolling.

I know this isn't right because i own 2 other iPads (AIR & Mini). To be fair i didn't really try browsing with Safari too much, because i was so shocked by this stuttering in games,i download about 50 games to try and all showed the same stuttering.

I took it back to the store the following day & they offered me a replacement. To my horror the replacement did the same thing.

Now i tried everything, all the usual steps.Nothing stopped this stuttering.I actually timed the intervals between each stutter - The stutter happend every 5 seconds or so,as if a process was kicking in every 5 sconds,in EVERY game i tried. The effect is more obvious in some apps than others, but it was there nonetheless.

Apple support viewed my screen remotely & could also see this effect.Unfortunately,i had to get a refund. It was far too off-putting with any 2d game with scrolling, because it made the problem obvious.

This doesn't seem to widespread, but it's happend to me with 2 different iPad 2017s.

I started a thread on Toucharcade about this, with more detail,if anyone is interested.

Well,

Went to my Apple Store today and tried the new iPad 5 and the jittery scrolling is definitely present and is noticeable as is makes everything slightly out of focus as you scroll with your finger.

This jitter does NOT happen when you do a single, large flick of your finger onscreen and let the content "free scroll".

No scroll jitter that way.

The jittery scrolling only happens when you constantly and consistently do short finger scrolling movements.

This jittering scroll is across all apps, so I am thinking this is some sort of hardware issue.

Either a GPU issue or a touch panel issue. Definitely a hardware based issue with the new iPad 5.

It's a nice bright screen and it's quick, but I don't know if the scrolling issue wIll get more problematic, visually, after awhile.

The scroll jitter was sort of bothering me and bothering my eyes after only a short exposure to this issue.

I may wind up getting my wife a refurb 128 GBs, Wifi iPad Air 2 that doesn't have this screen jitter/stutter issue.

I can get a refurb 128 GBs iPad Air 2 for $10 less than the same storage model iPad 5 and NO screen jitter/stutter.

But the iPad Air 2 is a two year old device.

The new iPad 5 has only been out for a month.

Decisions, decisions...

Is nobody else seeing stuttering/jittering across all games? (i've seen one other report) Not one review or test has picked up on this.

Just try a game with vertical or horizontal scrolling, preferably 2d,such as Geometry Dash. This game is perfectly smooth (60fps) on all my older Apple devices.Playing this on the new iPad 2017 highlights the problem i was seeing on both devices i had.

This is just one example,it's across the board,Sometimes hard to notice in some apps, but once you know what to look for you can see it.And it's a deal breaker. The effect is very simialr to the slight pause you see when a game logs into game centre.........But every 5 seconds or so.

Not sure if this is a hardware,iCloud or a Gamecentre issue. But i did set up a new Apple ID & set up the device as new with this new Apple ID to test this theory.........Still the same problem.

This is such a shame, because it's such a nice & quick device for the price.
