How to deselect all messages in mail

I accidentally selected all messages in my Gmail account, now I cannot seem to deselect them. Can anyone please help?

You post this at Classic Mac OS, meaning Mac OS 9 or earlier, but your profile shows macOS Sierra.

# Mac OS and macOS are similar name but different product.

So, I assume you're using Mail included in Sierra.

In the case, I do below to deselect all message.

  1. Click one of messages. ( This makes only the message selected. )
  2. Command+Click on the message. ( This toggles the selection, so you'll get no messages selected. )

Be careful, don't double click on step 1, which may open all messages.
