iPod Shuffle vs. iTunes 12.6 - Unmanageable

I just bought a 4th gen iPod Shuffle, and iTunes 12.6 (on OS X Sierra) will not present the "Summary" screen so I can see the device info. I can't alter the settings to enable/disable manual syncing. There is no right-mouse-button menu option other than Eject, Sync, or Transfer Purchases - no Settings. I tried looking through the iTunes menus: iTunes -> File, no luck. iTunes -> File -> Devices, all options grayed out, so no luck. I clicked on the image of the device, nada. I tried iTunes -> Preferences to "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically, but it doesn't seem to affect the Shuffle in any way. Even when it's set to be set to "manual," I can't delete an individual song.

I was able to initially set up the device and create a playlist, then couldn't delete a song from the playlist. After a ridiculous amount of fiddling around, I inadvertently managed to figure out how to delete the playlist, but still cannot delete an individual song from the Shuffle. Now that I've deleted that one playlist, iTunes 12.6 won't let me add a new playlist, or rename the device, or pretty much anything else. The info/help online all seems to refer to iTunes 12.5 or earlier. Do I actually have to uninstall iTunes 12.6 and install iTunes 12.5 or earlier to manage this device??
