Finder quit unexpectedly while using the Finder plug-in, after updating to MacOS Sierra 10.12.4

I've never had any issues with my MacBook (late 2013 Pro retina), but now after updating to MacOS Sierra 10.12.4 and restarting, Finder will not start but report "Finder quit unexpectedly while using the Finder plug-in". If I click "ignore", it just returns after a second.

I have found several potential solutions and tried these:

- rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

- rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

- start in Safe Mode (problem still there), and try the two lines above

- Run in Recovery mode, start Disk Utility, and repair the harddisk. My "macbook hd" is greyed out, so I cannot cannot do the find&repair on there. Perhaps this is because FileVault is turned on?

Thanks for any advice you may have.

Similar to gillianlkh, I tried reinstalling the OS (same version that was giving me this error message, 10.12.4). I was unable to reinstall from App Store, so I followed the instructions on MacOS Recovery at How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support . Read those instructions, but it boiled down to: reboot, when you hear the reboot chime hold down command-R keys until you see the apple icon, then let go, follow prompts to "Reinstall macOS" ... took about 30 minutes, and it fixed the Finder problem.
