Hi,

Your MacBook Pro likely has a faulty discrete GPU. So many of this model have the issue that Apple created a repair program for them, but it expired Dec 31, 2016: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/. Try the following to see if it helps:

Install gfxCardStatus (https://gfx.io) and set it to "i" (integrated graphics only). It will allow your MBP to run on integrated graphics only, bypassing the discrete GPU which has the issues. This may allow your MBP to run normally, although it will have reduced graphics performance when performing demanding graphics tasks. The alternative is replacing the logic board, which is not cost effective on a machine that old, unless gfx does not resolve the issue and you really want to keep this MBP.

Also, Grant Bennet-Alder claims:

There is an acknowledged bug in the current version of Cody Kreiger's Open-Source gfxcardstatus, and the developer has confessed he does not have time to fix it right now.

There is a fork off the main build by steveschow available that seems to fix that problem for current versions of MacOS such as ElCapitan and Sierra. He provides a finished .app for direct download -- you do not have to compile anything.

Dear, I need your help.

My MBP is 15 inch, mid 2010 model.

I have installed GFX Card status and is running.

But when i have kept it in " integrated only", it is keep restarting, rather it runs with " dynamic switching mode".

What is the solution. Do you think- the life of my MBD is almost over?

Some local technician advised to install Windows through Bootcamp- it may run well as it use Intel graphics- is it true.

Jun 9, 2017 9:17 AM in response to Soumendeyy

I haven't heard from anyone who has tried both the gfx and steveschow methods; have you tried them both?

Do you have graphics switching turned off in System Preferences > Energy Saver?

I have heard of Windows working in a situation like this, however, do you want to buy/get all new Windows apps and pay for a Windows OS, and then be running on Windows instead of macOS?

Jun 21, 2017 8:38 AM in response to Soumendeyy

For your particular model's issue, in the mid 2010 15" MBP, the motherboard repair guru Louis Rossmann and associates have discovered that the problem with this exact model only is that there's a $2.50 capacitor that goes faulty, and causes random power shortages to the graphics card. Which is actually what is causing the issues, not the graphics card itself!

I have the same MBP 2010 15" model, and have just ordered the replacement capacitors myself. From what I've read, almost everyone who does this mod completely fixes the issues with the graphics card kernel panics and other issues with the screen glitches etc, and when it switches to the 'discrete' graphics card (Nvidia GT 330M).

Here's the link to his youtube video on replacing the capacitor on the motherboard..

Should you trust an Apple Genius when they tell you it's a graphics processor? - YouTube

There's also forum posts on the subject, which state which exact capacitors to buy. Of the 3 choices, people were having some issues with the 'ceramic' smaller capacitors, but pretty much 100% success with the 'aluminium' ones.

The aluminium one most people are using with great success is the: "Panasonic EEF-CX0D331R".
This is the Canadian link I was given, to the exact aluminium one I bought (but I bought from an Australian supplier, stock coming from UK):

https://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/panasonic-electronic-components/EEF-CX0 D331R/PCE4275CT-ND/816445

Hope that helps some of you. This is MacBook Pro 2010 15" only.
(exact same capacitor issues but in a different location on 2008-9 MBP).

Aug 12, 2017 2:13 PM in response to R-J-K

I did the replacement with a ceramic cap a month ago. I have had no issues running with the built in display (I run Logic which aways switches the GPU), however if I connect an external display to the display port .... it's back.

This was a very difficult repair to take on. I was able to remove the old cap and clean up the board without issue, but soldering the new cap was "fun". Finally got it, but it did not look pretty. Also, I broke the side of one of the fan connectors while removing the logic board. Not sure I would attempt doing this again.

With an SSD drive and 8gb RAM, it is still a fairly usable machine.

Aug 30, 2017 11:38 AM in response to tjk

Hi tjk

Thank you very much for your answer. It fixed my issues.

I had to install gfxCardStatus from steveschow (v2.4.3i - Integrated-Only Patch) and setting the program to "Integrated only".

Story before:

I updated yesterday from 10.7 to Sierra (10.12.6). I haven't updated for soo long because I had the same issues years ago when trying to update from 10.7 to probably 10.8 or 10.9 (not sure anymore which version exactly it was).

During updating i had the first 3-4 crashes and reboots. However, finally the update worked. It seemed fine for a short moment. But when using the mac more intensivelly (especially when working with performance intensive tasks like video oder indesign) the mac crashed often, intermittend black screen, etc... like described in this question and GPU panic error messages in the log.

Thanks againg for your post.

Good to know. Haven't heard back from anyone whether the original worked or they had to use steveschow. Thanks for posting.

Hi, i have found this thread after i received an old MBP 6.2 15" model which hat the same Problem.

I have patched the Kernel with the file you can download here:

https://github.com/julian-poidevin/MBPMid2010_GPUFix/blob/master/FAQ.md

Without the tool it didn't work with gfxcardstatus for me. After patching the kext files i could use the System normally without any crash.

Sorry for my bad english, i am not a native speaker.

Maybe this is helpful for somebody who has the same Problems.
