2013 imac 27 inch stuck resolution

I recent picked up a 27inch 2013 imac. It was displaying full resolution when I first turned it on, but after I installed all new updates and sierra I am only presented with 1280x720 res. I have tried resetting the PRAM. Reinstalling sierra. And the option key to display other resolutions in the preferences. Pretty much everything I could google I tried... I am out of options and decided to make my own thread.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally, if that doesn't fix it then re-install Mac OS again. If that doesn't work, then I'm out of ideas and you need to take it in to be looked at.

Well okay, thats a weird one , I suspect a corrupt install of Mac OS.

First backup the computer using Time Machine or create a bootable clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. You have not been backing up your computer and that must, repeat MUST be done or you will eventually lose critical data. You need an external HD (I recommend OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro line and create your backup.

After you have acquired an external HD and backed up the computer, remember to test the backup before going to the next step, then restart the computer in the Recovery Partition by restarting and holding down Command + R. After it has restart in Recovery Partition re-install Mac OS on the drive you have Mac OS installed on. This type of install will not overwrite data however it is critical you have a backup just-in-case of a problem.

I have the same problem. My Imac is a late 2011 model on which I have "Frankensteined" an Nvidia Geforce 765M taken from a Clevo laptop. Like you, I am only presented with one resolution; 1280X870. Worse still, the display stays black. Luckily, I had previously set the computer up for screen sharing so that I can reset the startup drive on which I have 10.12.4. Please note that this only happened when I updated from 10.12.4 to 10.12.5. Prior to that, the video performance was just fine (although I had no boot screen). I have also installed the newly-released Nvidia web drivers. I can switch between the drivers that are bundled with the system software and the Nvidia web drivers but it makes no difference. I have noticed that the 2013 27-inch Imacs all use Nvidia video cards (755 and 775). That seems to be the common denominator between your system and mine: closely related Nvidia cards. Anyway, if anyone can shed any light on this frustrating problem, I, for one, would be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance.

Go Sens!
