Where is the progress/status/download bar for garageband?
I can only seem to view it when I click on a video tutorial. I clicked on reinstall sound library and the status bar window only pops up when I am viewing a piano or video tutorial.

Look closely at the Display Mode Button, the Icon on the far left of the LCD in the Control Bar.
If any progress is going on in the background, you will see a little bar.
Click on the bar and a popover window opens with details about that progress, for example downloading Sound Library.
It also appears when you Re-Index the Apple Loops
