Can no longer send SMS from MacBook Air and iPad

My MacBook is running OS 10.11.6 and it seems that when I did a security update last week, I suddenly can no longer send SMS via iMessage, nor can I send texts from my iPad to non-Apple users. I had been able to do this with no issues for the past year. My settings have not changed on my primary device, my iPhone. iPhone and iPad are both running 10.3.1 and the message settings are set up for text forwarding to both MacBook Air and iPad. And yes, "send as SMS" is selected. Sorry if this has already been addressed, but when I searched it said it could not find any other questions that matched mine. Thanks in advance.

There is this thread where some claims to have spoken to apple and to "reset the Phone"

There are queries about what that might entail.

Hi,

for the Points and the Points.

That is my understanding of the set up instructions.

They essentially follow the way iMessages was added to the iPhone then the Mac then full iMessages sync at iOS 8 on the iPhone and Yosemite on the Mac.

Text Forwarding comes after that, which is after the Apple D and iPhone are linked for iMessages.

Of course the iPhone also needs "Send as SMS" to be on and linked to the LAN by it's WifI connection.

Hello,

I got the same problem with my MacBook Pro on Yosemite, the SMS transfert fonction doesn't work anymore with my iPhone 6S on 10.3.1.

I've tried to deactivate and reactivate, but now the code to put on the iphone to autorize the transfert doesn't show up on my mac.

Thanks for this. I tried both options in this thread and neither has worked. I assume "re setting" my phone meant restarting, but it did not help.

I can read SMS texts from non Apple users on both my MacBook Air and my iPad, I just still cannot respond. I can only respond from my phone. So receiving works, I'm just not able to send SMSs.

I think that did the trick, thank you! One question: in my messages settings on iPhone: do I need to leave the send & receive with my phone number and my apple ID? Or can I set it to phone number only?
