I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer this might show us why your are having difficulties with Safari. No personal information is shown.

Etrecheck – System Information

Apple makes the iPhone and iPad. Of course they include their own browser. Would you find it equally amazing that Android phones all include Chrome as the default browser, seeing as how both software titles belong to Google?

You can easily, very easily download iOS device versions of Firefox, Puffin, Chrome and numerous other browsers. You can't make them the default (so touching a link in an email will always jump to Safari), but there is otherwise nothing stopping you from launching whichever browser you want to use.

Hello,

It appears you've burned some bridges, but I hope I can help you with your problem, if you still want it.

I looked at your Etrecheck information, and noticed that you have Safari.app as a startup item. That means that in your System Preferences, under your Users and Groups, then in your profile, and under the Login items, you have Safari.app set to launch whenever you reboot your computer, or log in if you have logged out of your profile. Perhaps that is where your problem lies. If you remove Safari from startup items, the system would know that it can be removed as your default browser. Since it's in the System Preferences as something that the system thinks you want to use all the time, it will not let you select anything else.

So, if you'd like, please try that, then try whatever other browser you choose, then try to see if you can make it your default browser. Just don't add it to your login items, unless you're really sure you want it to open each time you restart or log-in. I hope this helps, or even reaches you!

Sorry if I have put things in here that you may already have known, but it's better to have as much info as possible, eh?
