Hi
I am also hoping to get the 'new' 2017 9.7" iPad.
If you are looking for a better than good 'padded carry case' that closes with a zip or other closure you could try the excellent 'Thule' brand, as my Thule zipped case (used for iPad Mini 4, but 'designed' for earlier models of iPad Mini) is just about big enough even with Apple brand gel case & smart cover fitted (separate items unlike previous iPad Minis that use 'smart case').
Without the 'smart cover & gel back case' fitted it would fit even more easily.
It has VERY generous interior padding, and very soft lining material. It took me 8 months to find it though. It was also the only one I could find 'designed for' an iPad Mini 4 that was more than big enough for iPad Mini 1, 2, & 3.
Every single other one I found was far smaller (too small for my iPad Mini, even without the smart cover & back gel case fitted).
I suspect 'slip cases', 'smart covers' (front of iPad only) & (rear of ipad only) gel cases, are NOT going to fit models they are NOT designed to fit.
Though saying that, a 'poster' earlier today (or yesterday) claims his 'iPad Air' (NOT iPad Air 2) case DOES fit HIS 'new for 2017 iPad. Don't know any other details. A case of 'try before you buy', if you can.
I made the mistake of buying an iPad Mini 4, before I had found out it was 0.17" 'wider' (while looking at it in landscape view'), so iPad Mini 1,2, 3 screen protectors and model specific 'cases' do NOT fit, despite what ANYONE says about them being the 'same'. They are NOT.
I still do not have a screen protector a year later. My zipped case has a LOT of padding AND a 'special liner' that 'prevents scratches' for users without any other protection of 'smart covers', screen protector films, etc. I am also VERY careful with it. I ALWAYS use a 'soft tip stylus'.
The Apple branded items were expensive but far better quality & fit than other 'cheaper alternatives', but they ought to be for the price. I bought those the same day as the iPad Mini 4.
I am positive they (Thule) would or DO still have (zipped case) items for all 9.7" iPads including the 'new for 2017 iPad'.
Screen protectors from 'whoever', should also fit all RECENT (i.e. iPads AFTER iPad 4) 9.7" models -unless bezels ARE different sizes - unlike iPad Mini 4.
There are many brands of 'tempered glass' screen protectors, for 'regular' size '9.7 iPads'., so I don't imagine difficulty finding one for the 'new' 9.7" iPad.
I was checking the dimensions 2day for iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro (both '9.7' inch models) and they are supposedly EXACTLY the same (as your 'New for 2017 iPad') for external metal casing dimensions for width & length, & 'visible screen display' (of 9.7") - 240mm long x 170mm wide, and 285mm (diagonal at case edges). The bezels of their last iPad Air 2 & 9.7" iPad Pro look the same to me, so the 'new' one should be the same - according to 'sales staff' - but they could not prove it, as they had none in stock.
The only tiny differences I could see are 'thickness' of the different models (from front to back), which would not affect choice of 'zipped' or padded cases.
When I get my new iPad I will get a Thule zipped case, as well as either a 'Tech 21' brand screen protector, (and a Tech 21 gel back case as both are fitted to my iPhone 6Plus), or I will get an APPLE smart cover and APPLE gel back case, along with Tech 21 screen protector, if I can find them.
All these brands are VERY GOOD quality, but not cheap.
Hope that helps
Bob
