Deleting Rendering files during a project

Hi guys,

Can someone please help?

I see a lot of support notes regarding deleting rendered files AFTER a project to free up space, but what I want to know is if one can safely delete render files DURING a project as well.

I am currently working on a major film project, whose length will be a bit over 90 mins of heavy footage comprising special effects, audio effects, transitions, images etc As you can imagine, it is voraciously eating up my hard drive.

Well, being a big project I expected my hard disk space to be depleted, what I didn't anticipate was the volume of space the Rendered files would eat up.

I am currently still working on the project, and I am only 30 mins into the project and the render files have already generated 3-digit Gigabytes, and growing.

On smaller projects, I would normally just delete the render files and move on, but on this major film project I am a bit too wary of the consequences of deleting render files in a bid to free up space.

A lot of forums suggest that it is ok to delete render files, but most are often stated within the context of a completed project. I want to know if the seemingly safe action of deleting render files applies to both ongoing and completed projects. Before hitting the delete button, I want to be sure there won't be dire consequences for my ongoing film project?

Is it safe? Yes.

Is it wise, maybe not.

FCP X can re-generate any of the render files at any time.

If the existing render files are required for smooth replaying on heavily worked clips or sequences it's probaly a good idea to leave things alone, otherwise you have lots of downtime redoing the stuff.

IMO, for important work it would be easier to just get more drive space.

Terabytes of space is fairly normal in todays editing world.

BTW: any new drives should formatted to Mac OS Extended before putting them to work.

I second what Alchroma said about large drive space.

Regarding deleting the render files: yes, it is safe. These files can be generated again, if needed - and that is another point which may help you. By default, "Background render" in turned on. Most of the time, FCP X can playback fine without it, so it usually advised to turn it OFF and only render parts of the timeline manually if the application can't handle them smoothly without rendering.
