"A required iTunes component is missing" (~45075)

I had an earlier version of iTunes which ran fairly well until it suddenly stopped working this morning and after several attempts I could not get it to run, so I decided to update it with the latest version from the iTunes web site.

I've now been through several iterations of trying to install and get the ****** thing to run but it insists that "A required iTunes component is missing" (~45075).

I've let the installer try to 'repair' it but that made no difference.

I uninstalled iTunes, rebooted the PC and made a fresh installation, and got the same result.

So what is missing? The Apple error message is inadequate as I have no idea what's wrong and I've done what it said, 'repair or reinstall' the program.

I see that many people have run up against this and the frustration is obvious in some posts.

I've spent about two hours this afternoon searching for advice, but getting nowhere. What's the remedy?

The general troubleshooting advice when iTunes fails to install properly (and reinstalling or repairing it does not work) is to remove not only iTunes but all related components, reboot, remove the target installation folders and reinstall. Follow turingtest2's advice on how to do this in the Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components section of:

Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates

Thanks. I've followed the 'Removing and reinstalling...' advice as per the link you gave. Everything that was present was removed without difficulty and no residual folders were left behind.

I'm running Win 7 Home Premium SP1 on a 64 bit Operating System. I downloaded iTunes64Setup.exe (a fresh download) and ran the installation as Administrator. The whole installation went without any problems, but.... nothing happens when I click on the iTunes desktop icon!

I now get no error messages, but I can see iTunes in the Applications tab of the Task Manager so something's running.

The Processes tab shows iTunesHelper.exe is running. I've looked through the whole of the troubleshooting article you linked to but cannot see any advice on what to do next.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, of course.
