Hi, dwsaunders!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I understand that your podcasts are no longer automatically downloading. This has occurred since you installed a recent iOS update on your iPhone. I'd be happy to help!

First, I recommend checking your Apple Podcast download settings. This can be done as described in the iPhone User Guide here:

Change the download settings for a subscribed podcast. You can turn off automatic downloads or specify whether to download all unplayed episodes or only new episodes. Tap My Podcasts, tap a podcast, tap User uploaded file, tap Download Episodes, then tap an option.

To change the default setting for all podcasts, go to Settings > Podcasts > Download Episodes.

If the automatic download setting is selected, turn it off, then force close Apple Podcasts as detailed here: Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch . Once the app is closed, restart your iPhone: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch . Then, turn the automatic download option back on.

If the issue continues, try the steps in this article: If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open . Even though the title of the article doesn't describe your issue exactly, the steps in it are still relevant to troubleshoot, since the app is not functioning the way you expect it to.

Complete all steps in the article (you can skip the step about downloading another app from the App Store), and if you still continue to have trouble, reach out to Apple Support directly. You can get in touch with them here: Contact Apple Support

Cheers!

Hi dwsaunders, I'm not sure if this will help you or not, but I had the same annoying problem. (iPhone 6) I had individually set each Podcast to either download 'all unplayed', limiting or unlimiting each one as I wanted, but still, auto-download would simply not work (but used to) with the 'cloud' symbol informing me I had to manually hit the 'download' button. I just read another forum where they instructed to check the "Podcast" settings (I didn't even know that existed) under (iPhone) Settings > Podcasts> There you find all the same settings (e.g Refresh Every... / Limit Episodes.. / Download Episodes... / Delete.... etc. As soon as I changed these in settings, the podcast app said "125 episodes downloading". Fixed. Why you need to override instructions when you've just set them all individually in the app is beyond me, but then, many things are. It was a fix, so sharing in case it helps. This is the link that helped me: https://appletoolbox.com/2017/05/iphone-podcast-download-not-working-fix/#10_Tip s_to_Get_Your_Podcasts_Downloading_Again
