Green lightning bolt flashing

My Apple watch will not charge nor turn on . When attached to the charger, the green lightning bolt icon flashes on and off about every 6 seconds.

  • It will not reset nor power of/off it while in this mode.
  • I’ve tried using the iPad power block.
  • I've tried a new Apple watch charger.
  • I’ve tried charging it by connecting to my iMac’s USB.
  • Without power, I cannot control any features, like the erase/reset from my iPhone.
  • I’ve cleaned it and the charger surface.

Any suggestions?

Hi

It is not possible to turn off Apple Watch whilst it is charging - that is normal.

It may help to try charging your Apple Watch again.

In addition to the steps that you have already tried, also check that:

All plastic wrap has been removed from both ends and both sides of the charging cable (check closely on the head of the charger).

  • The charging head is properly aligned with the back of the watch, with the concave / curved side touching it fully:
    • Some watch docks, stands, cases or protectors might hinder this.
    • If you are using any such accessories, try instead charging the watch by connecting it directly to the charging cable, without using them.
  • If you are charging your watch by plugging the cable into mains power:
    • Check that the USB connector on the Apple Magnetic Charging Cable is pushed fully into the USB Power Adapter.
    • Check that the USB Power Adapter is pushed fully into the power outlet.
    • Try using a different power outlet (one that is known to be working properly).
  • Remove your Apple Watch from the charger and restart it or, if necessary, force restart it before trying again to charge it:

If you identify an issue with a particular component (adapter, cable or watch) or if the issue otherwise persists, contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider with a view to having your product(s) checked and, if recommended, serviced:

If you have the same issue, then follow the same instructions here, including contacting Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), making a Genius Bar reservation or visiting an Apple Authorised Service Provider if necessary:

Be sure to use only an Apple or MFi-certified USB power adapter or third-party accessory in conjunction with the Magnetic Charging Cable or Magnetic Charging Dock when charging your Apple Watch.

If you are already doing so, try using another such cable and/or power adapter (including trying an Apple iPad USB Power Adapter first, if you have access to one).

Depending on the battery status at the time of storage, whether you turned your Apple Watch off before storing it and on how long it has been stored, the battery may have fallen into a deep discharge state and now be incapable of holding a charge.

Apple advises that, when storing Apple Watch long term, you should store it with a 50% charge and then recharge it to 50% every six months. See under the heading "Store it half-charged when you store it long term":
