I don't want to do that as it would be too much hassle. I have over 30,000 songs on iTunes that we share including a lot that have been bought from Apple. I was hoping there was a way to use Apple Music without it disrupthe music on his phone too much.
we both have different music on our phones. If I switch on iCloud music library will this change everything on his phone too? He would hate that.
You can retain this with a Family Apple Music plan and Family Sharing. You really can't, and shouldn't, share an individual Apple Music subscription anyway. Only one device can be streaming at a time. With each of you having an Apple Muisc subscription, you can have your own iCloud Music Library.
No mingling of music. With Family Sharing, he shares his historical library with you and you add only what you wish to your library.
He doesn't want Apple Music. He just wants the same library he has always had which is a combination of songs he has bought which are in our shared iTunes and access to about another 30,000 songs which is our own cd's we have uploaded to iTunes.
What I want to know is can I switch on Apple Music iCloud to have it on m
You have different music on your phones right now, because you use the iTunes application to put it there. An iCloud Music Library changes all that and would for anyone using the same Apple ID. You no longer use the iTunes application to place music on your device(s). I don't believe you can have 2 devices using the same Apple ID, with one iCloud Music Library on and one off.
Once you use the iCloud Music Library and share an Apple ID, to Apple, you are the same person. Just using 2 different devices.
To not affect his music at all, you should have your own Apple ID for iTunes. To get an iCloud Music Library you must have ether Apple Music or iTunes Match.
So it sounds like in order for you to have an independent music library from him, you need your own Apple ID and perhaps Apple Music or iTunes Match.
Otherwise, yes, turning on iCloud Music Library may affect him. Apple IDs are not meant to be shared anymore.
You're welcome...
To be sure I am being clear... sharing an Apple ID has become to be a bit of a black art. There are times when services behave as expected when sharing and times when they don't.
Your risk would be learning the effect of your actions on his music experience, and that effect being un-doable in some unknown way.
Hi - it's much better to use separate Apple IDs and then turn on Family Sharing which provides a number of benefits and works with Apple Music. See more info here: Family Sharing - Apple Support
My phone but he can keep it switched off on his phone so that nothing changes for him.
Thank you. That explained it really well. It's very frustrating as we also only have one laptop. I'll need to try and get my head around it all.
Thanks. That's what I was worrying about. I think I need to take some time and work out the best way forward. The family sharing thing is probably the best option.
Same apple id with two phones. How will this work with Apple Music? i am reluctant to switch on icloud music library in case it affects my husbands music on his phone.
