Some users creating folders with problematic permissions

We are narrowing down a problem on our 10.5.2-server-connected Pegasus R4.

A couple of users, when creating folders on the share, do so with unintended permissions. The folder should presumably be made with "Staff Read and Write".

Instead, with these problematic users, the folder is created with, for example:

"James Read and Write"

"Staff Read Only".

This is a problem for anyone else wanting to change the folder and it's contents!

I can see nothing wrong with the user accounts in Server.app. They look like everyone else.

Anyone have a solution? My best guess at this point is to create new profiles for these users, which is going to be a PITA.

Thanks!

I thought maybe the users' Macs were to blame, but after someone helped me troubleshoot, I think it is something wrong with the server.

I was on the server desktop as the server admin account, and created a new test folder in the share. I, too, wound up with:

workgroup read & write

admin-name read & write

staff read only

everyone read only

^With those permissions, most users cannot move, delete, or add to, or create new folders.

So I guess I have to blame the problem on the server. It's great to narrow down, but I feel like I've tried everything on that side!

For future searchers, I found that AFP users were creating "workgroup read write" and "staff read only", and apparently SMB users were being recognized as staff only. AFP users, meanwhile appeared to have the write priveliges of workgroup. I have resolved this by having everyone connect via SMB, but haven't figure out how to cure the underlying problem.
