Time Machine backups fail

For the past week, Time Machine backups have been failing. I get a message that an error occurred while copying files. It suggests that if the problem persists, which it does, I should use Disk Utility to repair the backup disk. I tried doing that and it hung. So, thinking that the problem lay with my 3 year old HD, I bought a new HD (Seagate 4TB) and hooked it up. The same thing is happening. I ran Disk Utility, which said the disk is fine.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), macOS Sierra (10.12.3)

I found the following in Console around the time of the last failed Time Machine backup. Is this relevant?

That timestamped [Apr 15 14:39:37] message is when Time Machine stopped (or was stopped). It does not contain the reason why.

The 20 or so lines from right before that message may contain the key, if they pertain to Time machine and not something completely different.

You look to be having a terrible problem with communicating over USB. Are you using a USB Router?

If you navigate to that error line you showed before, then type "backup" into the search box, it will show only lines that pertain directly to the backup task or backupd daemon. Then the lines shown should be much more pertinent.

I am using the Google WiFi system connected via Ethernet cable to my Verizon modem. I tried running a backup excluding my user account and it ran. But that, of course, defeats the purpose. In looking at the lines pertaining to backup in the system log, they seem to relate to Google Photos Backup, so I have removed that app. Here are the lines. What do you think?

Ah, well........ For the time being, I guess I'll just keep relying on Dropbox, Carbonite and iCloud for my backups. I just hate having bugs that I can't find and I kind of like having a physical backup right nearby. Thank you for trying to help.
