How can I fix a grey screen on my monitor connected to MacBook Air?

My MacBook Air has a cracked LCD, so I'm trying to maximize utility by connecting it to a monitor. However, when I connected it to the monitor, all that I see is a grey screen with a cursor..

Hi,

Go to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement > select Mirror Displays > reset the NVRAM: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063.

If no luck, set Mirror Displays to the opposite setting and reset the NVRAM again.

If no luck, try booting into Safe Mode with and without the monitor connected: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Try resetting the SMC: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295.
