My Blu-ray player (Panasonic SA-BT230) has a connected surround sound home theater speaker set up. It has HDMI and two audio in optical ports. My TV has HDMI and optical. My Apple TV is 3rd gen.
I've tried several different configurations of optical and HDMI connections between Apple TV and TV and Blu-ray player and am having no luck. Is it possible? If so, suggestions?
I have tried just about every configuration of connections, including the one you mention.
Pictured (horribly) are the 2 optical inputs on the blu-ray unit. Maybe 2 optical cables need to connect: blu-ray to TV AND blu-ray to ATV?
Hi - it doesn't look like your Panasonic has any video inputs (just an HDMI out). So I think you would have to use 2 cables. Have you tried the following:
Run an optical cable from the Apple TV to the Panasonic optical input. Then run an HDMI cable from the Apple TV to your TV. Set everything on the right inputs.
Hmm...I would have thought that would have worked. From your picture you definitely have an optical audio in port. Does your TV have an optical audio out port by chance? Because if it does, then you can try HDMI from your Apple TV to your TV and then optical audio out from your TV to the Panasonic.
The Apple TV has an optical audio out.
Connect the optical out on the Apple TV to the optical in on your surround sound system and connect the HDMI out on the Apple TV to the optical in on the TV.
If that doesn't work it may be that the surround sound system can't handle all types of audio, you should then try adjusting the surround sound and Audio out settings on the Apple TV, if that doesn't help something is broken somewhere.
