Text Message History Disappeared

My dad has an iPhone 6 that was recently upgraded to iOS 10.3.1. His entire text message history has disappeared, but his phone reports the messaging app using 15.96GB of space. Is there any way to recover his text message history?

He has an iTunes backup that he has not synced with since the text history disappeared.

It makes sense that the data could still be on his phone right? I'm wondering if a database file is corrupted, and I can tweak it in a text editor.

It's not clear if you wish to recover the old text messages, or the space that appears to be unaccounted for.

To recover the space, try resetting the iPhone. Hold the on/off and home buttons (unless you have an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7+) together for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

To recover the messages, consider restoring a backup. This would restore the entire iPhone to the way it was when the backup was created.
