iTunes actually has this built in (play a piece of music in your iTunes library and while it plays, press COMMAND T)
But... it isn't very good. I'd like something I can customize a little better. Something like Laserium.
TThere are plugins for motion graphics apps like Motion that analyze audio tracks for freq and amplitude and can extract that data so it can be used to drive individual animation parameters in other filters and particle systems or replicators. Can't get much more customizable than that.
Motion is not for the timid. Not real time. Search YouTube for beginning tutorials And then decide if youve got the time to invest to learn how to design animation that interacts with music. You'll need a good week, maybe a month or so.
TThere are many third part visualizers for iTunes. There nothing for FCPX afaik, but there are many DJ and VJ products designed to do this stuff. They are just audio processing accessories.
