I have read receipts on my iPhone 6 turned off in the main settings. I have them enabled for one contact. Today marks the fourth time that I get a message from that contact asking why my read receipts have been turned off. When I go into the contact info, sure enough, the "send read receipts" is turned off, and I have to turn it back on.
I DID NOT turn them off. Any idea why this would happen?

After reading this Q/A string. I did some testing (Because I have the exact same problem - all off, on for one individual who keeps asking why they are off). 😢
Only when I delete the string between myself and this one individual, does the read receipts turn off.
So, when you delete that string, remember to turn it back on for that person when sending a new message.

Read receipts apply to iMessages. They do not apply to SMS text messages sent by cellular carrier. Are you certain this one contact is discussing messages transmitted using iMessage (to another Apple device, over either Wi-Fi or on a cellular carrier's network that transmits iMessages)? In particular, does the message bubble in question appear in blue on your iPhone (indicating iMessage), or green (indicating SMS text message)?
upon research on my personal iPhone 7 if you have read receipts off and then turn them on for individual people sometimes they turn off if you reset the phone or when you have the messages app open and they clear in the ram(don't know how to explain the last part) but if you have read receipts off turn on the ones you want to send it to and then close the app via double tapping the home button than force closing and see if it's still on when you open the app again. I found having read receipts on and turning them off work better but you should do the process vice versa.
to recap Make sure read receipts is on or off depending on you liking and force close the app reopen and make sure it is on/off do this process at least 3 times to verify
The contact is my gf, and she has an iPhone 7. She is definitely referring to our iMessages that go back and forth. lol Message bubble appears when we text. Previous messages show "Read" with the time.

Then all of a sudden she asks me that question later in the day. I check the info under her contact, and it was turned off. I live alone. My cat isn't doing it. I'm trying to come up with an explanation for her. lol
I don't want to have read receipts on for everyone. Just this one contact. I did toggle iMessage just now. We'll if that helps, or if I get a fifth time that this happens.
Setting>Messages "Send read receipts" make sure that's turned on alternatively Turn off iMessage and Turn it on again
