Enable trim on external SSD?
Hello,
We have a G-Drive Slim SSD connected via USB-C to a 2016 MBP.
Should we enable trim on this external drive? If so, how?
Appreciative of your help!

that command enable TRIM for Third-party SSD drives on your system. If you have an Apple Brand SSD as your boot drive, it will not be affected in any way -- TRIM is already on for that Drive.
To check use:
menu >About this Mac > (System Report) > SATA (or whatever interface
Select the drive in the list
look for the Line: TRIM support Yes

use this Terminal command Apple provided in 10.10.4 and later:
sudo trimforce enable
This turns on TRIM for all drives on a System. The setting is stored as part of the running MacOS, and is honored in Safe Mode.
There are some anecdotes that suggest TRIM may not be enabled for certain External drives. Exactly which are allowed/not is not clear.
Older versions of Disk Utility would allow you to "erase free space" on a drive, which might help keep an SSD in better shape, but that GUI option has been removed.
According to anandtech.com, the G-Drive Slim SSD is based on the SanDisk X400 SSD, a slightly older unit which does offer trim support. Within the review, however, it states that TRIM support on the G-Drive was not available on Windows. Apparently, one of the reasons this unit was such a "deal" is that it is less robust than its counterparts. Bummer.
Thanks for the reply.
And just to be sure, doing so will not change the current trim settings for the MBP's internal SSD?
Thanks again.
The command apparently did not change the trim status of the external drive.
System rebooted, etc.
But nowhere in the system report is there a line entry for trim for the G-Drive SSD.
