why does my mac think its somewhere else

Computer sleeping. Phone alert says someone is trying to sign on to my account with a new device in the state of Deleware. I'm in Pennsylvania. So I follow the prompts to change my password and all of my devices think they are in Delaware including my iPhone.

Is my info being copied somewhere. Or did the IP server change locations and an auto update triggered the alert.

Help!!

If your Router is not in Apple's database, a location based on your ISP will be used.

The method for accurately determining your geographical location on a Mac is so convoluted it would make Rube Goldberg proud.

Your geographical location is determined from an Apple database of Wi-Fi Routers that have been seen by GPS-capable devices such as iPhones, and reported to Apple more than once.

My Anecdote:

I live so far off the street, my three Routers cannot be detected by passing traffic. For a long time, my automatic location was either ten towns away, where my ISP has a lot of equipment, or "unknown".

Then we had a party, and friends brought their iPhones. Next time I looked all three Routers were geo-located, and had very accurate and slightly different locations.
