Hi Brendan dv. Thanks for your answer. Before your response I had thoroughly checked all my settings against what I had in my iPhone (which was receiving email OK). I was then in the process of reluctantly deciding to delete my AOL account from my iPad and then, as you suggest, re-setting it. My "Notes" were saved along with my email account so, because I didn't want to lose these, I emailed each one of them individually to myself I because I knew at least they would come through on my laptop or my iPhone. I was then at the stage where I nearly deleted my AOL account when I realised that the emails of my Notes had been received by my iPad along with all the others which came flooding through from the beginning of March 2017. I really cannot explain how this cured the problem. The only thing I did do was in Settings > Mail > Accounts >AOL Mail, I turned off Notes. Do you think it was this which did it. If it was I still don't understand why when my iPad had been receiving mail for ever until early March 2017 without me touching anything. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question. Very much appreciated.

Hello Barbether,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I'm understanding correctly, you are no longer able to receive email on the iPad, and cannot delete or move mail to trash. I rely on my Mail app to work properly and will be happy to assist.

Please try these steps below to resolve the issue, from the article: If you can’t send or receive emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Before you begin

iOS backups made in iCloud and iTunes back up your mail settings, but not your emails. If you delete or change your email account settings, previously downloaded email might be removed from your iOS device.

When you're ready, try the steps below. After each step, see if you still need help.

Check your settings

When you set up your email account on your device, iOS automatically uses the correct account settings for many email providers.

To make sure that your account settings are correct, compare the settings in the Mail app to the settings for your email account:

  1. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts and tap your email account.
  2. Tap your email address next to Account to see the account information, such as the incoming and outgoing mail servers.
  3. Check the recommended settings for your email account in the Mail Settings Lookup tool and make sure that they’re the same as what you see on your screen. If you don’t see the settings for your email account, contact your email provider or system administrator.

If you have a POP3 email account, then you can only check email on one device at a time. Close other email programs and sign out of webmail sites that you have open. To check if your email is a POP3 account, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts, tap your account, and look for the label POP Account Information. You can also check the recommended email settings for your POP3 email account in the Mail Settings Lookup tool.

Remove your email account and set it up again

  1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your iOS device.
  2. On your iOS device, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
  3. Tap the email account that you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete Account.
  5. Add your account again.
Cheers.
