How are you determining that the iMac does not see the external hard disks on your iMac?

I assume they are USB external drives, is that correct?

Do they have their own power supply plug into the wall outlet or are they powered by the USB connector?

If you open System Information (click on Apple icon at top left of screen and then hold down Option key and you will see "About this Mac" change to "System Information"). Once there, click on the USB item on the left in the Hardware section(just above the "Networks" item). Do you see the USB drive details listed in the main part of the window - you might need to scroll up to see them (should show you the manufacturer and model and size and file system type and lots of other bits of info?

If you go to a Terminal window (located in /Applications/Utilities) and type the command "diskutil list" what do you see (copy and paste the command and output to your reply)?

Good luck...

thanks for reply dot.com

see diskutil make with visible internal disks and only "My passport" (disk 7) external disk!

My complex :-) situation (but no problems before update to 10.12.4) is:

"G-DRIVE" (disk3) connected with thunderbolt port (NTFS for Windows);

"My passport" (for Mac storage) connected with second thunderbolt port, though thunderbolt to firewire adapter;

"My passport Studio" (for time machine) connected with above "my passport" through their FireWire ports;

"Elements" (NTFS for Windows) connected with USB 3.0 (though usb hub with their own power supply);

"Kingston" USB 3.0 pendrive (fat_32) connected wit iMac USB port.

tks for any help and regards

P.S.: I have another problem with 10.12.4... for switch to windows 10 with reboot with key "C" my iMac freezing and i need to iMac off and on again with key "c"

Last...sorry for my bad english!

I have never heard of a drive appearing in Finder but being "inactive". If a drive shows up in the Finder then it is mounted, and nothing should be needed from disk utility. If, on the other hand, a drive is physically connected but not mounted, it would not appear in the Finder, and you'd have to use Disk Utility (or diskutil in the timeline) to mount it.

What is it exactly that does not work with the drive? Care to elaborate?

Thank you for clarifying.

I see now that some of the drives do not automatically mount, and you have to mount them manually using Disk Utility.

I don't know why that is happening.

I can only suggest that you disconnect all external drives, reboot in Safe Mode, then reboot normally again.

Next, try again starting with all the drives connected and see if this changes anything.

Do you really want to see all the NTFS volume when running macOS or just when booted in Windows?

If you do want mounted in macOS, what NTFS software are you using to mount volumes (macOS can only mount NTFS volumes in read-only mode without other software)? Perhaps read-only mode in macOS is OK?

Also what does the Terminal command "df -kt" show?

Like Luis noted below when you posted the screenshot from Disk Utility, none of the drives are mounted when that screenshot was taken. So did you mount before you did the "diskutil list" command?

So, if you use Disk Utility to "eject" one of the unmounted volumes, then unplug the cable from the iMac and then plug the cable back into the iMac, does the volume automatically mount then?

Have you done anything with modifying the /etc/fstab file to change the normal automount behavior?

If not, please read this article to set up an auto mounting capability:

Good luck...
