Skype for Business high CPU usage

My company recently switched over to Skype for Business. I'm running the latest version of Sierra and the latest version of Skype for Business. Ever since I installed Skype I noticed my fans running more often. I check the activity monitor and Skype is always running at least 60%, and that's when it's just idle, not a video call or anything. I checked with one of my colleagues and his Skype for Business said 0.2% when idle.

Has anyone else seen this and more importantly, have you found a solution?

Hey there, StrangeBrewTatoo.
It appears that an application you've installed on your MacBook Pro is causing the fans to run and the Activity Monitor shows its CPU usage is high even when it's not being used. I'm happy to help.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

Reset the SMC on Mac notebook computers

First, determine whether the battery is removable. Mac notebook computers that have a nonremovable battery include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, MacBook (Late 2009), and MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) and later. Learn more about Mac notebook batteries.

If the battery is nonremovable:

  1. Shut down your Mac.

  2. Unplug the MagSafe or USB-C power adapter from your computer.

  3. Using the built-in keyboard, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time. Hold these keys and the power button for 10 seconds.

  4. If you have a 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button.

  5. Release all keys.

  6. Reconnect the power adapter.

  7. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac -- Test how it responds in safe mode. If there are no issues, reboot normally and test again in your own user account. Remember this when booting in safe mode: Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- If the issue is also happening in safe mode, use this article to test another user account. This will demonstrate if the issue is isolated to your account, or if it's system wide.

Let me know how that goes and take care!
