I just started using mac for work and want to schedule appointments with colleagues. Is there a way to see when the other person is free in the calendar built into mac?

If you're on an Exchange server, and you're looking for functionality similar to what you get in Outlook when scheduling meetings, yes. Once you've added a recipient, you can use the Check Availability box to see their schedule.

My question is how to see other person's calendar. This link just tells you that you can share your calendar but does not tell how to see others calendars. Please give me a little extra detail to help out.

If everyone set up Calendar sharing, you could see each others calendars. An alternative might be a web based Calendar program. I've never used one, but I found the one below if you want to look at it.
