Mail automatically cc'ing me in Exchange

Hi all,

I'm using Mail (v10.3) in Sierra (10.12.4) on a 2015 MacBook Pro retina. I have seven different email accounts setup including a Gmail, Yahoo, a couple of iCloud, and an Exchange (Office 365). When I respond to an email from the Exchange (O365) account, my email address is automatically added to the CC field, which I find quite annoying. In Mail Prefs under Composing, I have "automatically cc: myself" unchecked. This is ONLY happening with the Exchange (O365) account. When I was using Outlook with the same Exchange account, this never happened.

Any thoughts, idea or suggestions?

Thanks, and best regards.

You indicated that it only happens with the Exchange account, and none of the others. Apple Mail has no settings to automatically CC yourself for an individual account. It's all or nothing, so I don't see how it can be a Mail issue.

Do you have any add on extensions for Mail?

I don't think a rule in Mail can do this, but you might check to see if any rules are created that may be affecting this.

I do remember a similar problem years back someone had like this. For them, it was a setting created in an Outlook webmail site. I know you said you checked setting in Office 365, but you should log into the webmail site and check settings there also.

Hi Glenn,

I did check the webmail/xmail settings for O365, when I mentioned it previously. I'll also reach out to our email admin, as I'm at Wit's End.

Per your suggestion, I did check my Rules, but I only have one running, and it highlights emails that were sent from external accounts to my work account. Nothing for outbound.

I don't have any add-ons or plugins running, though I'm going to start using MailTags and Mail Act-On again. I've never had them installed on this computer, so I know they're not the cause.

Thanks, and best.

I doubt that this is a problem on your computer, but if you wish to eliminate the possibility that is a problem with your user account, I would create a new user for testing purposes. Log into that user account and create the exchange mail account there. Be sure the Automatic CC is not checked and test there. If it does the same, you will know that it is surely an Exchange account problem.

If it works ok in the new user testing account, then you can find the corrupt file in your user account and fix it. It would likely be the com.apple.mail folder in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail

The com.apple.mail folder will contain settings you created in Mail. Quiting Mail, then moving that folder out of Containers folder, then restart Mail will reset Mail settings back to default. You accounts and messages will remain. If that doesn't fix the problem, then quiting Mail and replacing the original file back to the Containers folder will put back your original settings.
