shutdown while updating iTunes library

I upgraded to the new iTunes about a month ago, and since then have not been able to utilize the program at all. When I open iTunes the software liscencing agreement pops up, I choose agree, iTunes boots up and a pop up that has a loading bar comes up that says "Updating iTunes Library." The bar begins scrolling and at about half way through the updating process, the entire iTunes application shuts down. When I reopen iTunes, this process occurs again, the program quits while updating again, and I am never allowed to actually use iTunes. Please help.
