I have Intel Macbook 2006 and wanted to run hardware check using the "D" key on startup. This is not working and the "D" key is fine and operational on all other levels. How else can I do a hardware check as this Macbook is 10 years old?

macOS DVD is need for all OS under 10.7. Since 10.6 is maximum on those models you need the DVD.

IIRC, your Mac should have come with two discs; AHT is on the second one, not the installation disc. You will need this disc, not a 10.6 install disc. You may be able to find the correct one on eBay if you no longer have it.
