Keyboard show signs of use after only a week. What to do?

My keyboard show signs of use shortly after purchase (I bought the MacBook last week), as some of the keys has become somewhat shiny, which really bothers me, as the keyboard shouldn’t be worn out already. As far as I can remember, I didn't experience this with my old MacBook until after several months - if not a year. Has anyone else experienced this shortly after purchase, and what can I do to prevent/fix it?

I've read several discussions concerning keyboards and how to clean them. However, I've never tried cleaning the keyboard with rubbing alcohol, as I'm afraid it'll only worsen the problem..

This is NOT normal. I'm very ****** actually.

This is my 3rd mac book pro. my original unibody from 2008 that i used up until 2012, until i bought a new mac book pro in 2012, has no signs of wear like this. I used my 2008 for 4 years and then my 2012 cracked a screen and i continued to use my 2008 for another year until i could get time to fix it. Once fixed i gave it to my wife to use when i bought a new 2017 with the touch bar.

This laptop isn't even a year old and already my A S D and E keys started to wear 2 months after i bought it. Mean while my 2008 and my 2012 have only the S key has only slight wear on it. Also some keys are sticking or take extra effort to push.

So basically i had a 2008 5 years and a 2012 used for now 4 years and my less than a year old MBP looks worse.

Hi,

Nothing you can do to prevent/fix it. You may want to visit an Apple Store "genius" bar and see what they have to say about it: https://support.apple.com/contact

While you're there, also look at a display model and see if it shows the same wear.

You have 14 calendar days to return your Mac for refund or exchange. If you really believe this is not normal wear (I suspect it is), get a refund or exchange and see if it happens again. After that you should be convinced and if it bothers you that much, buy a different model or a Windows machine and see if it happens there. Personally, I'd live with the keys as is. And no, I wouldn't clean them unless the tops get sticky; cleaning will likely only exacerbate the problem. Since 1992, I've never once cleaned a Mac keyboard and never had any problem or stickiness with them. Of course I don't use my keyboards with sticky/dirty fingers. 🙂

Hey!

I don't use my keyboard with sticky/dirty fingers either, as I wash my hands before using my MacBook. Always have done. The keyboard is therefore not sticky in any kind of way, but some of the keys have "lost" their matte finish. The matte finish hasn't completely disappeared (so the problem isn't as bad as it may sound/seem), but I can tell a slight difference. However, the keys that show these signs of use are the ones I've used the most for the past few days, so I guess that must be the only logical reason. Like you said; it must be normal wear.. As mentioned, I also experienced this with my old MacBook, so it's not like it's abnormal or anything. It's just annoying to me 😀 But thank you for your reply! ☺️

I personally think they didn't realize the huge impact shifting from their last gen keyboards to this near-glass-like typing surface would have on the keys.

Like my fingers are just too powerful now after years of typing. Then again going from an old commodore/IBM style click keyboard in the early 80's to where we are now in 2017, my fingers could probably bench 20lbs. lol.
