Wireless clients show ip-adres

my internet connection starts with a modem without router, an Ubiquiti Edgerouter X and than an Airport Extreme.

for some reason the wireless clients that are connected to the Airport Extreme do not show their device name.

instead they show their ip-adres or their mac-adres.

would that be enough ??

I said it might help.. only trial and error will show.

the manual of the router mentions names like "host_name<domain_name>.com

this would identify the router in the internet.

It is not an internet domain but it could help..

If you still have issues I think you can either ignore the problem.. as the rest of us do.. or move dhcp server to the Airport which is possible.. without introducing double NAT.. see for example.

instead they show their ip-adres or their mac-adres.

It's a one-in-three chance that wireless clients will display the way that you want, since they can appear randomly as......

1) An IP Address on the local network

2) A MAC or AirPort ID address

3) DHCP Client Name

and, there is no way to control this. Try restarting the wireless device and or restarting the AirPort Extreme or both to see if things will display as you wish.

Unfortunately, even if they do, they will likely change again.

How have you done the setup?

I presume the edgerouter is main router and Extreme is bridged?

This does take away the opportunity for the Extreme to see the name as part of its DHCP service. ie there is nothing in the extreme to help it with names.. just IP or MAC address.

Apple router does have a strange way of displaying wireless clients at the best of times.. as Bob said.. it is lucky dip even in full router mode if it shows as name, ip or MAC address.

Having the correct domain can help a bit.. make sure the edgerouter is using local for domain. The airports seem locked to it even when bridged.

how have I done the setup, you ask me.

setting up routers is not the usual thing for me.

there are wizards and I followed one. it creates a dhcp-server, NAT, DNS, a basic wan-firewall, etc.etc.

and the router is working.

my cable modem is in bridge-mode and connected to the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter.

next device is an Airpoirt Extreme AC, which is in bridge-mode.

using the correct domain could help, you say.

the default setting for domain is blank, empty, nothing.

so, I entered "local" in there.

would that be enough ??

the manual of the router mentions names like "host_name<domain_name>.com

this would identify the router in the internet.

thanks 🙂
